One important benefit of duct cleaning is that it improves the efficiency and performance of your home’s forced-air heating and cooling system. But this is not the only benefit to be gained from a thorough cleaning of dirty ducts in the home.
Other Potential Benefits of Duct Cleaning
Lots of materials can get lodged in the ducts that distribute air to each room of the home, including dust, mold, dander, chemicals, bugs, and even dead animals like mice or birds that become trapped and never get out. Your heating or cooling system is a bit like human lungs in that it takes air in and “breathes” air out.
In a normal forced-air HVAC system, all of your indoor air is recycled between five and seven times each day, which means there’s plenty of opportunity for dust and debris to become lodged in ducts. Even in a system with effective air filtration, some of this unwanted material will stick in the ducts, and over the years will accumulate. This is why there’s no standard for how often to schedule a duct cleaning – some homes can go several years without it, while others need it much more often.
As much as 25 to 40 percent of all energy used to heat or cool a home is wasted, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, and one reason for this is that contaminants in the heating or cooling system cause your equipment to work much harder than it should. By cleaning away all that debris in the system, the HVAC system can work normally and be much more efficient in using energy.
So there can be health benefits as well as savings in energy costs, when a thorough duct cleaning is undertaken in a system that’s gotten dirty through time. For best results, a qualified technician should inspect your ducts and assess whether a duct cleaning is necessary now, or can wait. During that inspection, he likely will ascertain whether duct leaks or other problems are present, as well.
