Your A/C keeps your house cool all summer long when the mercury rises into the 80s and 90s, but if you’re like many homeowners, you probably worry about your bills and energy usage. You’ll likely be using your home’s cooling system for much of the summer, so here are some ways to make sure you get peak performance from your A/C.
- If you haven’t already done so, schedule an A/C tune-up before the beginning of the hottest part of the summer. You won’t get peak performance from a system that doesn’t work properly, is dirty, has a low refrigerant charge, or has damaged parts. Hire a qualified technician to take a look at your A/C and go over each component for proper operation.
- Have the coils cleaned in both the inside evaporator unit and the outside condensing unit. Dirty coils inhibit the vital heat-exchange process that’s essential to A/C operation. They will greatly increase your energy costs and make your air conditioner work a lot harder than it should to cool your home to the desired temperature.
- Inspect the A/C air filter monthly and change or clean it when it looks dirty. Air filter changes are commonly recommended once every one to three months by most manufactures, but you should check your air conditioner to be sure. Waiting too long to change your air filter can tax the system and eventually cause damage that will further impair performance.
- Consider an air duct cleaning. If your home is new or your forced-air filtration system working properly, you may not need this task done, but if you have lived in your home for some time or you’ve purchased an older home, an air duct cleaning may help improve the operation of your air conditioner. Sealing duct leaks is also important. A home with leaky ducts can cost you almost 20 percent more on your heating and cooling bill. That’s a lot over a full year.
