  • Myth: Geothermal home HVAC systems run on steam from deep underground. While large-scale power plants in unique geological areas use super-heated steam from deep wells to generate electricity, home geothermal systems use a simple ground loop buried beneath the frost line in your yard as a source of heat energy for heating and cooling your home.
  • Myth: Geothermal systems put toxic refrigerants into the ground. Most modern systems use water rather than refrigerant in their ground loops. The water may be mixed with a small amount of anti-freeze.
  • Myth: Geothermal systems waste water. Most modern geothermal systems used a closed loop filled with water that never leaves the system. Even open loop systems that take water from an aquifer return the water to the aquifer after heat is extracted from it.
  • Myth: Geothermal heat pumps are not as cost effective as wind and solar systems. Home geothermal systems are far more cost-effective than wind or solar systems in removing home heating and cooling loads from the electrical grid.
  • Myth: You need a huge yard for a geothermal heat pump. A ground-source heat pump loop does not require much yard space if it’s excavated and installed vertically.
