As the winter season gets under way, you’ll want to keep your Northeast Ohio home cozy and warm. Now’s a good time to evaluate your furnace to determine if a replacement is necessary. An outdated furnace is frequently the culprit behind rising energy costs, and the last thing you want is for the heat to go out when it’s 5 below in January. This makes it a smart idea to examine the unit before winter hits.
Determining the Age of Your Furnace
When a homeowner purchases an existing home, the furnace is often already in place prior to moving in, making it hard to determine its age. If you’re unsure, you can check to see if the original owner’s manual is still in the house. If not, try contacting the manufacturer and reference the unit’s model number. Since the lifespan of a furnace ranges anywhere from 15 to 30 years, you should seriously consider replacing once it hits the 15-year mark. It may still have some life in it, but it likely wastes energy and doesn’t provide even or reliable heating.
Signs That Your Furnace Needs to Be Replaced
You can usually determine that a furnace needs to be replaced before it fails by looking out for these telltale signs:
- Frequent repairs: Your furnace may require frequent repairs due to part failure and other malfunctions.
- Rising energy costs: Energy bills become higher when your furnace runs inefficiently, and it may not have been very efficient to begin with.
- Uneven heating: There’s often a fluctuation in temperature throughout the rooms in your home, which can make it hard to maintain a comfortable environment.
- Excessive noise: When a furnace is on its last leg, it often begins to rattle, buzz or hum as it becomes overworked, which in turn overwhelms the unit.
If your furnace exhibits one or more of these signs, you’ll want to call in an HVAC specialist as soon as possible. Your Greater Cleveland area technician can perform diagnostic tests on your unit to find out if a replacement is necessary. By replacing an outdated furnace with a new energy-efficient model, you can expect to start reaping monthly savings immediately.
