Air Cleaners: Some Key Points That Can Guide Your Choice

Would you like to significantly improve the quality of your Northeast Ohio home’s indoor air? Air cleaners can remove many of the airborne pollutants that trigger or exacerbate allergies and other respiratory problems.

However, not every air cleaner is the same. To help you breathe easier and reduce the amount of dust, allergens and asthma triggers within your home, check products for one or more of these three ratings or attributes:

  • Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). CADR indicates the volume of filtered air delivered by a portable air purifier. This rating provides an objective standard for you to easily evaluate the effectiveness of an air cleaner. It measures the percentage of pollutants removed from a space by the cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air flow through Air Cleaners: Some Key Points That Can Guide Your Choicethe purifier’s filter. The three contaminants it rates are smoke (rated from 10 to 450), pollen (25 to 450) and dust (10 to 400). The higher the CADR rating, the faster the purifier can filter the named pollutant.
  • High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA). In contrast to other filtration products, HEPA filters use three mechanisms to trap particles: Interception, impaction and diffusion. These filters are highly efficient and can be used in both stand-alone air cleaners and a central forced-air system. However, when used in a central air system, significant equipment modifications typically are necessary to ensure that you maintain good system airflow.
  • Asthma and Allergy Friendly. This new certification has been crated by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation to acknowledge air cleaners that have been proven especially effective at reducing airborne allergens. Air cleaners with this label have been subjected to intense evaluation of their filters’ capacity per defined space, inner fiber shed potential, and the effectiveness of their fiber seals.
