Do-it-yourself tipsKeep Your Ductless Mini Split Maintained to Ensure Efficient Operation

A ductless mini split is a small air-source heat pump with redesigned components (conduit contains refrigerant and drainage tubings) that allow homeowners to cool and heat practically any area in a home no matter how tight a space may be.

The compact outside unit and each indoor air handler need a little TLC on occasion to ensure free airflow is maintained. Use these tips as you’re cleaning around the home and yard.

  • Regularly remove and wash the air filter of each air handler.
  • Inspect the inner components of each air handler for dust and debris. Wipe with a soft cloth if needed.
  • At the outside unit, clear an area of three feet in all directions to allow free airflow.

Schedule professional maintenance

Ductless mini splits utilize sophisticated components in order to extract heat from inside your home (cooling mode) and move and release the heat outdoors. Each component relies on the efficient operation of the next in order to accomplish this task with the least amount of energy consumption. These are some of the maintenance checks your HVAC professional performs during a service call:

  • The evaporator coils and indoor air quality components are inspected for debris and mold.
  • Drainage lines are inspected for blockages and accumulation of algae, sediment and debris.
  • Remote control functions are tested.
  • Airflow movement at each air handler is checked in regards to oscillating features, speed control and assembly balance.
  • Refrigerant levels are checked and adjusted if needed.
  • The condenser and compressor in the outside unit are inspected for function, leaks and signs of wear.
  • Electrical contacts are inspected for function and secure fit.
