Does your Greater Cleveland home need duct cleaning? While the U.S. EPA says that duct cleaning hasn’t been proven to improve indoor health, it stands to reason that dirty, moldy or contaminated ductwork won’t do anything to improve your health. Here are some factors to consider regarding duct cleaning in your home:
- When to clean: If you or a professional have surveyed the ducts and found no excess mold, mildew, rodent excrement and dust, cleaning is probably not necessary. This is especially true if no family members are dealing with allergies or other unusual illnesses. The EPA recommends cleaning ducts on an as-needed basis, such as when mold, rodent waste and dust are visible and interrupting system airflow. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association, ducts should be cleaned every three to five years depending on various home factors.
- Improper duct cleaning concerns: Should a service provider fail to properly clean your ducts, your home’s indoor air quality may actually worsen. Improper vacuum collection can result in more dirt, dust and other airborne particulates polluting the air. Research service providers thoroughly before choosing one to clean your ducts. Note that ducts that aren’t sealed correctly will result in a higher energy bill.
- Home and lifestyle considerations: Duct cleaning may be required based on certain home and lifestyle choices. Pets, weather conditions, renovations, smoking and general home upkeep are all key in determining how soon ducts should be cleaned. Have your ducts inspected to determine if cleaning is needed, or simply unscrew the register and look yourself.
- Cleaning benefits: Benefits of duct cleaning (which includes cleansing related HVAC components) include saving on your energy bill, as dirty blowers and coils can interfere with efficiency. Heat and circulatory systems clogged with mold and dust will end up costing you more money, and cleanings generally result in better-smelling homes.
