Is it time for an A/C replacement in your greater Cleveland home? There are a couple of different reasons why you might want to replace your air conditioner; perhaps your unit is underperforming and you need one with more power, or maybe you just want to take advantage of the HVAC tax credits and rebates that are available this year. No matter what the reason, it’s crucial to make sure that you choose the right model to keep you and your family comfortable. A little time spent picking the right model now will save you years of regret down the road.
If you want to ensure that you get the right A/C, keep the following factors in mind:
- Size – A professional HVAC technician will help make sure that the unit is the proper size for your home. He will calculate the cooling load of your home – considering a variety of factors in addition to the home’s cubic footage – to recommend the correct sized A/C. One that’s too big or too small will waste energy and not provide balanced cooling.
- Ductwork – Have the technician check your ductwork to ensure that it’s compatible with the new A/C. You may consider having your ductwork replaced or retrofitted to work with your new high-efficiency air conditioner.
- SEER rating – seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) is the system used to rate the energy efficiency of an A/C or heat pump. The minimum SEER rating is 13, though you’ll achieve greater savings with high-efficiency (SEER 16 or above) air conditioner.
- EER rating – Choose a unit that has a thermal expansion valve and an EER rating greater than 11.6, which will ensure efficient operation on the hottest summer days.
