Having a steady supply of hot water especially during the winter season is a great source of comfort, but your budget may suffer in the process if you’re using a traditional storage-tank water heater. In this case, properly insulating your water heater is essential if you want to avoid needlessly wasting energy.
In a storage-tank water heater, unused heated water just sits inside the tank until it’s used or cools off and has to be reheated. This wastes energy, resulting in higher utility bills. Take note that heating water takes up as much as 13 percent of a utility bill on average, so finding ways to make your water heater more efficient can have a big effect on savings.
If you have any doubt that your water heater is experiencing standby heat loss, feel the side of the tank. If it feels warm, you’re wasting energy. This is more likely to occur in older models, since state-of-the-art storage water heaters usually come already insulated.
Here is where insulating your water heater tank comes in. You can either use an insulating blanket or jacket on your water heater, either of which is relatively easy to install, with one qualification. For gas water heaters, you may need help from a trained professional, since you’ll want to avoid causing problems with the gas lines and vents. In addition to insulating the water-heater tank, you’ll want to insulate the pipe that carries hot water away from the tank.
Insulating your water-heater tank is fast, easy and affordable, but the results can be significant. You can reduce heat loss by as much as 25 to 40 percent. This translates to more money saved for you.
If you’re looking to upgrade your home’s water-heating system, you might also consider switching to a tankless water heater. This highly efficient option heats only the water you need at any given time, so there’s no waste involved.
