As summer heat hits the Greater Cleveland area, you may be noticing that your air conditioner doesn’t cool your home as well as it used to, or perhaps you’re having to repair it more often, or your cooling bills are higher than ever. You may be wondering which is the best choice – to repair or replace your air conditioner. Your final decision should depend on several factors.
If your air conditioner is less than 10 years old, it may make sense to schedule a repair appointment. In particular, this is probably your best option if you already have a high-efficiency system that’s still under warranty. Although there are exceptions, if your air conditioner fits these criteria, it’s probably going to be more cost effective to repair it rather than replace it.
On the other hand, if your air conditioner is older than 10 years, the potential improvement in energy efficiency from upgrading to a new high-efficiency model will be significant. Replacing it with a unit that has the Energy Star rating will save significant money on your utility bills, and over time those monthly savings will actually pay for the new system.
Other considerations when deciding if you should repair or replace your air conditioner include how often you’ve had to call for repairs and whether your utility bills keep going up. If you’ve noticed either of these signs, your air conditioner may be on its last legs. You may also find that some rooms in your house are staying too hot or too cold, or noticing increased indoor humidity due to the equipment not functioning properly.
If you decide that a new air conditioner is in your future, look for a unit with at least a SEER 14 rating, the minimum for Energy Star-certified models. This rating measures how efficiently the equipment turns electricity into cooling, and the higher the number, the better. While SEER numbers currently go as high as the mid-twenties, as they go higher the equipment gets more expensive. Your HVAC technician should be able to point you toward a high-efficiency model that’s right for both your home and budget.
