Tidying The Yard? Tend To The Heat Pump Too

With spring here and even warmer weather not too far away, many people are spending a lot of time working in their yards. As long as you’re outside tending to your garden or trimming trees and bushes, you might want to take the time to clean around your heat pump or air conditioning unit. Keeping the outside components of your cooling equipment and the area around it tidy will make your system operate more efficiently and protect your investment.

If your heat pump or air conditioner cannot easily get air, it cannot effectively transfer heat.

  • Clear any leaves and debris away from the unit
  • Trim back any tree limbs, bushes, vines, weeds or grass near the heat pump

Coil Cleanup

The coils on the heat pump or air conditioner are key to the heat transfer process

  • The coils on the unit should be cleaned of dirt and grime at least once a year
  • Make sure you turn off the power to the appliance before you do this

Cleaning the Cabinet

Your should protect your investment in your heat pump or air conditioner by regularly cleaning its cabinet.

  • Wipe the cabinet off with a clean, soft cloth
  • Give the cabinet a light coat of standard clear car wax to prevent rust

Things You Should Not Do

There are several things you might do that could damage your heat pump or air conditioner or make it operate less efficiently.

  • Do not build solid fences around the unit, since this can block airflow
  • Do not lay objects on the unit or rest tools against it
  • Do not use a cover of any kind on the equipment, since this can increase moisture and rusting
