As you know all too well, heating and cooling your home can be expensive. Thankfully, there’s an energy-efficient technology that can help you heat and cool your home while also working to save you money and energy. A geothermal heat pump uses the consistently moderate temperatures found several feet below the earth’s surface as the medium of heat exchange, as opposed to a conventional heat pump, which transfers heat in the air from one place to another. As a result, a geothermal heat pump can achieve 300-600 percent efficiencies when heating, as opposed to half that for an air-source heat pump. The savings over a gas-fired furnace or electric heating are even greater.
In addition to extracting warm air from your home in the summer, and depositing it back in the earth, some geothermal heat pump can heat the water supply for your home. Some geothermal heat pump systems come equipped with multi-speed compressors and variable fans that will amp up energy savings and comfort levels. These types of heat-pumps cost less to operate, run quieter, have a longer lifespan, and are considered more reliable for heating due to the consistency of their heat source.
In addition to regular geothermal heating pumps, there are dual-source heat pumps on the market. These pumps draw heat from both the ground and the air, and while they do offer more efficiency than typical air-source pumps, they are not as efficient as geothermal heat pumps.
The main drawback of a regular geothermal heat pump is that it costs more money to install than either an air-source or a dual-source pump. However, the higher installation cost is greatly offset by the amount of energy and money you can save. With regular maintenance and upkeep, your geothermal heat pump will keep you warm for decades.
