How A Carbon Monoxide Detector Could Benefit Your Family

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas given off as a byproduct of the combustion process. Nicknamed “the silent killer,” this gas is impossible to detect with any of the human senses. Every year, hundreds of people are accidentally killed in their own homes as a result of CO poisoning. Sadly, most of these deaths could have been prevented simply by installing a carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide detectors are designed to sound an alarm when carbon monoxide gas nears dangerous levels inside your home. Installing one of these alarms can not only give you peace of mind knowing that your family is being protected, but it can actually save your life.

Ideally, you should install a CO detector on each level of your home near any bedrooms so that the alarm will be loud enough to wake you if you are sleeping. Additionally, they should be installed near the ceiling since carbon monoxide is often carried upward by the warm air given off by your heating equipment.

To prevent false alarms, avoid installing CO detectors directly next to your furnace or any other fuel-burning appliances. This type of equipment may give off a small amount of carbon monoxide during the start-up process that could mistakenly trigger the alarm.

Once your carbon monoxide detector is correctly installed, if the alarm sounds, leave your house immediately and contact your local fire department. Remaining inside your home or reentering your home before being given the all-clear could result in death.
