Don’t Let Poor Ductwork Design Negatively Impact Your Energy Costs — Factors To Consider

Designing ductwork and its installation has a large impact on the heating and cooling costs of your home. According to the federal Energy Savers program, up to 30 percent of conditioned air can escape through poorly designed duct systems. Proper ductwork design allows air to flow freely between the air intake and the vents without excessive loss of heating or cooling. Ductwork should be well insulated where it runs through unheated areas such as crawlspaces or basements, and all leaks should be sealed to prevent heating or cooling loss.

In Ohio, designing ductwork properly is especially important in the winter. Heating costs are typically the highest energy cost in Ohio, and an efficient duct system can reduce those costs.

If you’re building a new home, designing ductwork to create the most efficient distribution of heated and cooled air is easy. Just make sure you have a qualified professional installing the duct system.

If your home already has existing ductwork, there are also some steps you can take to avoid heat loss during cold Ohio winters:

  • Check for leaks in the ductwork located in the crawlspace or attic. You can tell if a leak is present if you feel warm air blowing on your hand through the joint. Seal these leaks with mastic, foil tape or butyl tape rather than traditional silver duct tape.
  • Move furniture away from vents. Make sure all vents are open and free of blockage or dust. Close vents leading to rooms that you do not want warmed.
  • Do not try to repair major damage to the duct system on your own. A qualified professional should preform all service to ductwork to prevent health risks.
