Lake-effect snow and the frigid air that accompanies it will soon be sweeping across Lake Erie. Now is the time to upgrade your mechanical systems before winter sets in. Not only will you stay toasty during the often brutal Northeast Ohio winter, but you’ll save on your energy bills and qualify for up to $500 per product in federal tax credits that expire at the end of 2011.
About the 2011 Tax Credits for Energy Efficiency
The 2011 tax credits for energy efficiency reward homeowners like you for making energy-efficient upgrades and improvements to their existing, owner-occupied homes. These credits, which expire on Dec. 31, 2011, apply to the cost of materials and, in some cases, labor and installation. Improvements to rental properties, new homes and vacation homes are not covered under this program.
Claiming your tax credits is easy. Once you’ve had your qualifying products installed, simply complete IRS form 5695 and file it with your 2011 federal tax return. These forms should be available in early 2012 via tax software programs and wherever other tax forms are distributed.
Heating and Cooling Products that Qualify for the Tax Credits
A myriad of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) products are included in the 2011 tax credits for energy efficiency program. Among these are:
- Natural gas, oil and propane furnaces
- Electric heat pumps
- Natural gas, oil and propane boilers
- Natural gas, oil and propane water heaters
- Electric heat pump water heaters
- Central air conditioning systems
- Advanced main air circulating fans
It’s important to keep in mind that not every energy-saving product qualifies for the tax incentives — even some that are Energy Star certified may not qualify. A quality HVAC contractor such as Geisel Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbingcan help you navigate the details of the tax-incentive program while also making sure that you choose a product that will serve your home and family for years to come.
