Troubleshooting your furnace issues can be great when it helps you save money and the hassle of having to request a service call. A number of issues can be resolved without the assistance of an HVAC professional but if these quick fixes don’t work for you, it’s time to contact the professionals.
Below are some simple solutions to some of the most commonly experienced furnace problems:
- Make sure thermostat is set to “heat”
This is sometimes overlooked at the beginning of the heating season when the temperatures first start to drop.
- Make sure the temperature you set is higher than the current temperature
This will make sure your furnace kicks on.
- Check circuit box
It is a good idea to turn your furnace breaker off during the summer so that it doesn’t accidentally get turned on when you don’t need it. You just need to be sure to reset it back to “on” when the heating season arrives.
- Check pilot light
If your furnace has a pilot light rather than electronic ignition, ignite the light if it’s not lit.
- Turn on the SSU switch
This looks like a light switch and will be located on the furnace.
- Replace the furnace filter
If you neglect this, it will become clogged with particles from the air that it’s cleaning, making it difficult for warm air to pass through. Your home will not be as comfortable and it will cause your furnace to overwork. This makes your energy costs rise and can cause your furnace to overheat and break down. Check the manufacturer recommendations to see how often you should replace your filter.
- Make sure your vents aren’t blocked
If you have furniture or drapes in front of the supply vents that are delivering the air, this will block the air and prevent it from warming your home.
