Did you hear a loud noise? Where did that strange smell come from? Is it getting hot in here? Yes, that was the sound of your air conditioner dying a horrible death at the worst time – midsummer in the greater Cleveland area.
The key thing now is to replace the A/C quickly so you, your family and friends can enjoy a comfortable, cool home for the rest of the season — and for many years to come, hopefully. Oh, and you’ll need to take care of this as affordably as possible. Here are some of the basic things to keep in mind when replacing cooling equipment:
- Ducts: If you don’t have a duct system, it will probably be cost- and time-prohibitive to install one. Ductless mini-split systems are an excellent choice for cooling your house.
- Sizing: Don’t go out and buy the same size A/C you have now, since most older systems are oversized. Today homes are sealed much tighter than in the past and often require less cooling capacity than your original unit. Correct sizing is complex, so make sure it’s done properly by consulting an expert HVAC contractor. He will take precise measurements and conduct load calculations to determine the proper size for your home.
- Efficiency: Today’s home comfort systems are much more efficient than in the past. Highly efficient models may qualify for tax credits to help offset the cost of the new system. You’ll save on monthly utilities as well. For maximum efficiency consider a heat pump system. Now may be the time to think about going solar or geothermal. Installation is much easier than in the past and you’ll earn the most generous tax credits of all.
