Why Choose A Programmable Thermostat?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), programmable thermostats can save homeowners an average of 10 percent on heating and air conditioning energy costs. Since heating and cooling accounts for nearly half of your home’s energy use, a programmable thermostat is an ideal way to cut your energy bill each month and keep you in control of your home’s needs.

Most energy is wasted while you are sleeping or away from your home. Programmable thermostats allow you to set your desired temperature during the times you are awake and occupying your home. Without one, you either run your system much higher than needed and waste energy while you’re gone, or you don’t run it all, making your home either hot and stuffy or freezing cold upon your return.

The DOE recommends keeping your home at 78 degrees during the summer and 68 degrees during the winter. At night, you would then program the heating or cooling system to turn off or turn down while you are sleeping and resume the set temperature just a few hours before you return home for the day.

The key benefits of programmable thermostats are:

  • Temperature Control – Allows you to adjust the temperature while you are sleeping, away from your home, or returning home.
  • Less Energy Used – Setting your system to turn off or turn down while you’re not in it requires less energy.
  • Increased Savings – Using your system less often will reduce your energy bill and cut your costs.
  • Improved Comfort – The ability to set your system to start before you wake up or before you return home.

Depending on the manufacturer and model of the thermostat, other benefits may include an override for programmed settings, lockable keypad to prevent unwanted changes to programs, and multiple programmed temperature settings per day. These features allow more control over your thermostat system than you’ve ever had in the past.
